A jewel for the ceiling

Michael Anastassiades, the London-based designer of Cypriot origin has created Arrangements, a lighting system presented at the last Euroluce – Salone del Mobile.Milano in collaboration with FLOS, a leading company in the field of high-end residential and architectural lighting. Midway between a work of art and a design object, Arrangements is a modular system of luminous geometric LED elements that can be combined in multiple compositions of individual chandeliers. The modules are electrically and mechanically attached to each other using a simple mechanism and come together to create a perfect balance and the effect of a chain of light. For Miart 2018 a site-specific light installation was set up inside the Vip Lounge and so we met Mr. Anastassiades to ask him a couple of questions about this magnificent work, created as a result of the equally excellent collaboration with Flos.

Un gioiello da soffitto

How did the partnership with miart come about?

I was invited by miart Artistic Director Alessandro Rabottini to create an ad hoc installation for the VIP spaces at the event. He was convinced that my creations are perfect for this type of context, inasmuch as my works are able to overcome the frontiers that stand between art and design. Even miart is trying to break these patterns and in actual fact he has put the section dedicated to design right at the heart of the show.
Alessandro gave me carte blanche so I thought of Arrangements, a project I created for Flos, which was launched last year in conjunction with the Salone del Mobile. It was particularly suitable for this context not least because this piece allows the end user to free their creativity. Arrangements is actually composed of modules that can be freely combined with each other, creating the most suitable chandelier for your tastes.

Where di the idea for Arrangements come from?

I have always thought that there is a parallel between the world of design and that of jewellery. If you look in the dictionary for the definition of “pendant” you will find two meanings: one describes a jewel that descends from the neck of the wearer and the other indicates a light source that descends from the ceiling. Jewels are something that you wear, but lighting also has an important relationship with your body: these are the common points between design and the goldsmith’s art which inspired me in the creation of Arrangements.

What stands out about this lamp?

This lamp has two faces: one is visible when it is illuminated when it is able to use the light produced to create an atmosphere so particular that it changes the setting in which it is placed; the other can be seen when it is turned off – that is, most of the time – a period in which it displays all the beauty of its design.
